Question:What virtues has Sa`d ´ibn ´Abi Waqqas narrated about His Highness `Ali (A.S.)?
Answer: Although Sa`d ´ibn ´Abi Waqqas avoided to swear allegiance to ´Amir al-Mu`minin and didn’t support him, he himself has stated many virtues of Imam `Ali (a.s.) such as these:
It has been narrated in Sahih of Muslim and Khasa`is of Nisai that: Sa`d says: ‘I heard f r o m the Prophet (s.a.w.) attributing three features to Ali (a.s.) that if I had only one of them, it would be more pleasing to me than all the yellow and red gifts’. I heard him saying that: ‘Ali bears the same relationship to me as Harun had to Moses except that there will be no prophet after me.’
And I heard him saying that: ‘O people! Who is your leader (Muwla)?’ They said: ‘´Allah and Prophet (s.a.w.).’ and this question and answer repeated for three times, then he took `Ali’s arm and lifted him up and said: ‘For whomever, ´Allah and Prophet (s.a.w.) are his leaders, `Ali (a.s.) will be his leader too. Oh God! Be friendly with the friends of `Ali and enemy of the enemies of `Ali. And when the verse of mutual cursing (Mubahilah) was revealed “…, then say: come let us call our sons and your sons…”the Messenger of ´Allah (s.a.w.) called for `Ali (a.s.) and Fatima (a.s.) and Hassan (a.s.) and Husayn (a.s.) and said: “O God! These are my family.”¹
