Question: What is the word of Sunnite scholars about the reliability of Ismail Ibn Zakariya and accepting his quotations?
Answer: Zahabi has mentioned the biography of Ismail Ibn Zakariyya in his Mizanul I'tidal book (vol.1, p. 228) and said: Ismail Ibn Zakariyya Khalqani Kufi is Shia and a truthful person. He has counted him as one of those who the writers of six Sahih books rely on his word for reasoning; because there is a code beside his name which means that the writers of six Shahih books have accepted him.
He quotes tradition from Muhammad Ibn Suqah and Ubaydullah Ibn Umar according to Sahih Bukhari and quotes tradition from Suhail and Malik Ibn Mughul and other ones according to Sahih Muslim. But the quotation of tradition from Asim Ahwal is available in the both books and there is no doubt about it.
Muhammad Ibn Sabah and Abu Rabi'a according to the both Sahih books and Muhammad Ibn Bakkar according to the Sahih Muslim have quoted tradition from him.
He passed away in the year 174 A. H. in Baghdad. It is famous that he was a Shia, even some has attributed this saying to him:
One who has called the Prophet Moses (a.s.) from the Ayman Tur, was Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.). And he was saying: The first and last, the appearance and the reality is Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.).
Of course, these points are some nonsense words that the liars attributing them to him, because of being a Shia and giving priority to him on others.
Zahabi after quoting these absurd words in his biography in the Mizanul I'tidal book says: This word is not from Khalqani; because this is the word of atheists.(1)
