Quick Answer:
We know that one of the important aspects in the lives of our Imams (‘a) was that of their intellectual guidance and education of the society. Each of these leaders trained and educated a great many students during their time and they spread their own knowledge through the medium of these students throughout the society. Still, the individual political situations of the Imams (‘a) were not the same and differed significantly in some cases; for example, the time of Imam Baqir (‘a) and Imam Sadiq (‘a) were quite favorable and for this same reason, they educated a large number of students. The people who narrated traditions from Imam Sadiq (‘a) exceeded 4,000 individuals.
Detailed Answer:
We know that one of the important aspects in the lives of our Imams (‘a) was that of their intellectual guidance and education of the society. Each of these leaders trained and educated a great many students during their time and they spread their own knowledge through the medium of these students throughout the society. Still, the individual political situations of the Imams (‘a) were not the same and differed significantly in some cases; for example, the time of Imam al-Baqir (‘a) and Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) were quite favorable and for this same reason, they educated a large number of students. The people who narrated traditions from Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) exceeded 4,000 individuals.
At the same time, the era of Imam Jawad (‘a) up to that of Imam al-‘Askari (‘a) were unfavorable times and so their activities on this front were much more limited than their predecessors. When we look at the number of their students, the number is much less than those of Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) or Imam al-Baqir (‘a). Due to these circumstances, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that Imam Jawad (‘a) only had about 110 students and narrators of tradition [1], and only 250 traditions have been narrated from him. From one angle, the Imam (‘a) was under careful watch by the caliph and his agents, and from another angle, he was martyred at a very young age; scholars have said that he was no older than 25 when he was killed!
In spite of these conditions and circumstances, it is noted that the students which these Imams (‘a) did educate and train were from the notable personalities of their time. They included figures such as: ‘Alī ibn Mahzīyār, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Naṣr al-Baznaṭī, Zakarīyā ibn Ādam, Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl ibn al-Bazī‘, Ḥusayn ibn Sa‘īd al-Ahwāzī, and Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid al-Barqī; each of them was a heavyweight in knowledge and jurisprudence and some of them were the authors of numerous texts.
In addition, the narrators who narrated traditions from Imam Jawad (‘a) were not only found amongst the Shia, rather, individuals from the Ahl al-Sunnah school of thought were also present. For example, Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī has narrated traditions from Imam Jawad (‘a) and these include himself in the chain of narration.[2] Similarly, Ḥāfiẓ ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Akhḍar al-Janābadhī in his text Ma‘ālim al-‘Itrat al-Ṭāhirah[3], as well as other authors such as: Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Thābit, Abū Isḥāq al-Tha‘labī, and Muḥammad ibn Mundah ibn Mahzīyār also narrated traditions from Imam Jawad (‘a) in their respective books.[4] [5]
