Detailed Answer:
A study of the times and circumstances around Imam Kadhim (as) shows that even the most acute movement or stratagem against the oppressive government of Mansur was not in the interests of Islam. It was for this reason that Imam Kadhim (as) decided instead to follow up and proceed with the intellectual movement started by his father. He established the Jafari University and busied himself with training great students and men of intellectual stature and excellence.
Sayyid ibn Tawus writes: A large group from amongst the supporters and special followers of Imam Musa Kadhim (as), including the men of Bani Hashim would gather around the Imam to listen to his immaculate speeches and answers to questions posed by those present. They would note down his answers and record all of his words regarding upcoming events[1].
Sayyid Amir Ali notes: During the year 148 Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) left this world in the city of Medina, fortunately however, his educational movement did not end, on the contrary, under the leadership and guidance of his successor and son, Musa al-Kadhim (as) it maintained its excellence[2].
Musa al-Kadhim not only surpassed all the academics and intellectual scholars of the time in terms of knowledge, but was also the most well known for his ethical traits and praiseworthy attributes among the people. This was to the extent that any researcher who is aware of the life-history of this individual feels humbled in face of the morals and grand personality of this noble man.
Ibn Hajr Haytami, a famous Sunni narrator and scholar writes:
Musa al-Kadhim was the inheritor of his father’s knowledge and understanding; he also possessed his (father’s) greatness and perfection.
It was through the magnitude of his self-restraint, forgivingness and immense selflessness (in face of the ignorant people) that he attained the title ‘al-Kadhim’.
In his time he was unmatched in his understanding of the religious and secular sciences and in his generosity, and no one could come close to him in this regard[3,4].
