Question:is this saying of ibn Hazm true that It’am verse is not about Ali (a.s.)?
Answer: he has said that: “we do not believe in the Shia’s exegesis of the following verse, which is considered as a lie, and we avoid it. Because they believe that this verse concerns Ali (May God be pleased with him), but this exegesis is not true and this verse concerns all the people that do these things.(1) This is the verse:
وَیُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْکِینًا وَیَتِیمًا وَأَسِیرًا
“And they give food out of love for him to the poor and the orphan and the captive:” (2)
We say in response to this claim that, the one who recognizes these absurd sayings, certainly knows this man is denying the truth. He thinks that he can decrease the value of the tradition (which concerns the verse) by stating that the verse has been interpreted by the Shia, and by accusing them of mendacity. While he knows that there are many exegetes and scholars of tradition who have quoted this tradition with document, and have recorded it. What a tragic event it is, if he is not aware of this fact.
Hafiz abu Muhammad ‘Asimi has written a two-volume <Zayn al-Fata Fi Tafsir Sura Hal Ata> book, in this regard.
Does this stupid man think that all of these people and narrators are Shiite? Or they aren’t familiar with the traditions?! Or this person ignores any tradition concerning the Shia, though it has an authentic document?! Anyway, here we mention some of the narrators of this tradition, who are all the scholars of Sunni:
1. Abu Ja’far Iskafi, (died in 240 A.H.) (3)
2. Hakim Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali Tirmizi, who lived until the year 285 A.H., according to the narration of <Navadir al-Usul>. (4)
3. Hafiz Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jarir Tabari, (died in 310 A.H) (5).
4. Abu al-Qasim Zamakhshari, (died in 538 A.H.) (6)
5. Abu ‘Abdullah Fakhr al-Din Razi, (died in 606 A.H.) (7)
6. ‘Ezz al-Din ‘Abdul-Hamid, who is well-known as ibn abi al-Hadid Mu’tazili, (died in 655 A.H.) (8)
7. Qazi Nasir al-Din Bayzawi, (died in 685 A.H.) (9)
8. Hafiz ibn Hojr, (died in 852 A.H.) (10)
9. Hafiz Jalal al-Din Siyuti, (died in 911 A.H.) (11)
The text of that tradition is as follows:
Ibn Abbas said that: “Imam Hasan and Husain (a.s.) were sick. The Prophet (s.a.) and some other people visited them. Then he told Ali (a.s.) that: “O Aba al-Hasan, vow solemnly for the recovery of your children”. Afterwards, Ali, Fatima and Fazzah, their servant vowed that if Hasan and Husain got healthy, they would fast for three days. After several days they two got better and healthy. In that time, they were poor and didn’t have anything to eat at home. So Ali (a.s.) went to the Jewish Sham’un and borrowed three Sa’ (12) (almost 9 kilograms) of grain from him and took it to home. Fatimah (a.s.) made flour, then dough by one Sa’ of the grain and she baked five loaves of bread for each one. When they wanted to break their fasts with the loaves of breads, suddenly a needy person arrived and said that: “O Prophet’s household, peace be upon you. I am a Muslim poor man. Please feed me, May God bestows foods of paradise on you”. Then all of them devoted their own food to that man, and they broke their fasts with water and slept that night, while being hungry. Next day, they fasted again, and when they wanted to break it, an orphan arrived and asked them to give him food. They devoted again their food to him and they slept that night, while being hungry. The third day, the same as previous days, a slavery arrived and asked for food, and they did the same as previous days. Next day, Ali (a.s.) woke up and took Hasan (a.s.) and Husain (a.s.) to the Prophet, while he was so hungry that was trembling like a bird. when the Prophet (s.a.) saw them, he said that: “what is wrong with you? It is very painful for me to see you in this state”. The Prophet (s.a.) went to Fatima’s house, along with them. When he entered the house, Fatima (a.s.) was praying on the prayer niche, while being so slim (13) and there were dark circles under her eyes, because of hungriness. The Prophet became very sad, meanwhile the Gabriel came down and said to the Prophet (s.a.) that: “O Muhammad, God congratulates you for your household”. Then he recited Insan Sura for the Prophet (s.a.). Some of the mentioned exegetes and scholars of tradition have narrated this tradition in this way. (14)
