By looking at the books of tradition which the Ahl al-Sunnah have compiled, we can see numerous traditions narrated from Imam Ṣādiq (‘a). We will list a few of these below as examples:
1- Abū Na‘īm Iṣfahānī has narrated the following from Imam Ṣādiq (‘a): Whenever God bestows a blessing upon you and you would like for that blessing to remain and persist, then thank God much for it and praise him, for God has said in his Book: ‘If you are grateful, I will surely enhance you [in blessing].[1] And whenever your sustenance is delayed in reaching you, then ask much forgiveness from God, for he has said in his Book: ‘‘Plead to your Lord for forgiveness. Indeed He is all-forgiver. He will send for you abundant rains from the sky, and aid you with wealth and sons, and provide you with gardens and provide you with stream.[2] Oh Sufyān, whenever something from the Sultan or from another person makes you sad, then recite Lā Ḥawla wa Lā QuwwataÞ Illā Billah often, for this Dhikr (phrase of praise) is the is the key to expansion and a treasure from the treasures of paradise…[3]
2- It has been narrated from Imam Ṣādiq (‘a) that: The foundation of a man is (found in) his intellect (Aql), his lineage is found in his religion, and his greatness is found in his (level of) piety; the people are equal to one another in the sense that they all come from Adam.[4]
3- It has been narrated from Imam Ṣādiq (‘a): Oh children of Adam, why do you feel sorrow for something that you have lost which the passing of time will never return to you, and what is wrong with you that you feel happiness over something that you have which death will take from you?[5]
4- He is also narrated to have said: Anger is the key to every wickedness.[6]
5- He is narrated to have said: The key to goodness can be found in humility. The Imam (‘a) was asked: How would you define humility? He replied: It is found in your contentment with sitting at a place that is below your rank (in the midst of a gathering) and that whenever you see someone, you greet them, and that you leave a debate even though the truth is with you.[7]
6- He is narrated to have said: Whoever wants honor without (taking it from) a tribe, or a dignified demeanor without reaching kingship should leave the abjectness of sin and enter the honor of obedience (to God).[8]
7- He is narrated to have said: Whoever associates with a wicked person will not remain sound, and whoever enters a place of ill repute will be accused by others, and whoever is not a master over his tongue will be faced with regret.[9]
8- He is narrated to have said: The wisdom behind the prohibition of usury is so that the people will not be deprived of what is good.[10]
9- He is narrated to have said: The penance for working with the Sultan is goodness towards one’s religious brethren.[11]
10- He is narrated to have said: Whenever a pious believer becomes angry, his anger does not take him past the boundaries of truth, and whenever he becomes content, his contentment does not take him towards what is false.[12]
11- He is narrated to have said: There are three things through which God increases the honor of a Muslim man: forgiveness of someone who has oppressed him, and generosity towards one who has deprived him, and closeness (towards relatives) who have cut off contact with him.[13]
12- He is narrated to have said: The jurisprudents are the trustees of the prophets so long as they do not approach the doors of the kings and whenever you see jurisprudents who have approached the doors of the kings, then accuse them and censure them.[14]
13- He is narrated to have said: Abstaining from giving shows bad faith in God.[15]
14- He is narrated to have said: Daughters are a goodness from God and sons are a blessing; rewards will be given for the goodnesses and questions will be asked in regards to the blessings.[16]
15- He is narrated to have said: There is no better provision than piety. And there is nothing better than silence. And there is no enemy worse than ignorance. And there is no illness more difficult to cure than lying.[17][18]
