The second leader of the Shias was born in the middle of the holy month of Ramaḍān, during the 3rd year Hijrī, in the holy city of Medina. He was the son of Imam ‘Alī (‘a) and the Lady Fāṭimah (‘a), the daughter of the Holy Prophet (ṣ) of Islam.[1]
Imam Ḥasan (‘a) was no older than seven when the Holy Prophet (ṣ) passed away. After the passing of the Prophet (ṣ), his father Amīr al-MuÞminīn (‘a) lived for approximately another 30 years, until he was martyred in the year 40 Hijrī. At this point, he was s e l e c ted for the divine station of the Imamate and he held this position for approximately 10 years until his martyrdom at the behest of Mū‘āwīya in the year 50 Hijrī. He died at the age of 48 and was buried in the graveyard of Baqī‘ in Medina.[2]
