Question:What is the word of Sunnite scholars about the reliability ofSulaiman Ibn Surad and accepting his quotations?
Answer: Sulaiman Ibn Surad Khuza'i Kufi was a Shia noble-man of Iraq and was considered as an intellectual person and the people referred to him for consultation. The Shia of Iraq gathered in his home for writing the letter to Imam Husain (a.s.). He was the head and chief of Shia penitents and those who sought revenge for the blood of Imam Husain (a.s.); the chief of a group of four thousand persons who sought revenge for the blood of Imam Husain (a.s.) and camped in the Nakhilah of Kufah in the month of Rabi'us Sani in the year 65 A.H and from there they moved to fight against Ubaidullah Ibn Ziyad.
They confronted them in the land of Aljazirah and fought against them in such a way that all of them were killed. Sulaiman was martyred in Ainul Wardah by the arrow of Yazid Ibn Hasin Ibn Numair.
He was 93 years old at that time. His head and the head of Musabbab Ibn Najbah were sent to Marwan Ibn Hakam.
His biography have been mentioned by Ibn Sa'd in the sixth part of Tabaqat, by Ibn Hajar in the first part of Al-Isabah (vol. 1, p. 462), by Ibn Abdul Birr in Al Isti'ab (vol. 1, p. 196) and by all the writers of biographies of the ancients and all have praised him for his virtues, religion and worshipping Allah.
He had excellent attributes and a high place in his tribe and his saying influenced them. He is who killed Hushab the rebel and enemy of the Commander of Believers (a.s.) in the battle of Siffain.
Sulaiman is from those who believed that the enemies of the progeny of the Prophet (s.a.w.) were in error and the narrators of traditions have relied on his traditions. Traditions which he has quoted from the Prophet (s.a.w.) directly or indirectly have been narrated by Jubair Ibn Mat'am in the Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. According to what has been mentioned in the Shaih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim Abu Ishaq Subai'i and Uday Ibn Thabit have quoted tradition from him.
It has also been quoted traditions from the Commander of Believers (a.s.), Imam Hasan Mujtaba (a.s.) and Ubayy by Sulaiman and except these two books, Yahya Ibn Ya'mur, Abdullah Ibn Yasar and others have quoted tradition from him.(1)
